Another question for you to answer

Well it might bee a little odd, here I am, the guy who’s supposed to be writing something interesting for YOU to read… asking (for this post at least) to switch roles.

I have a question, a simple question but one that requires varied opinions to answer properly.

Has anyone lived in an apartment ABOVE the 10th floor (or there about) for any time? And what are your thoughts on it, is it worth it or not?

I imagine the view would be enough to make you forget about the longer elevator rides and what not but let’s see what you’ve all got to say. Me personally, I’ve never had an apartment above the 3rd… not by choice mind you, it just happened to turn out that way.

Comments please!

Just barely - I’ve lived on the 11th and 12th floors in the past. I’ve liked high apartments, but now I live on the 2nd floor and like it just as much. I did have a friend who lived on the 35th floor of an apartment building in NY, and while she had fantastic views, it was a pain in the ass waiting for the elevator, as there was only one that went to her floor. And nevermind when the elevator broke or there’s a blackout - you’re just not going to get home in those circumstances.

The blackouts are what I’m worried about most…

I have to admit that living on the lower floors is very convenient, but not without it’s flaws. Most of all I want to get away from street level noise, dust and smells. :)

Having a good view is also very tempting.

I lived on the 18th floor for a year - it was worth the occasional hassle of elevator outages. It is possible to climb the stairs - just takes pacing! Same with going down the stairs, if you don’t want to wait for the elevator.

With that said, it definitely felt more calm and quiet..almost cocoon like. Sunrise/sunsets were breathtaking. Never had a bug/pest problem - ever.

the once-annual random elevator outage and/or false fire alarm may inconvenience you temporarily but the views are sooo worth it! plus decor always looks better with a great backdrop

THE HIGHER THE BETTER YOUR PERSPECTIVE CHANGES COMPLETELY, THE ANGLE THAT THE SUN PENETRATES THE SPACE….IT’S A WHOLE DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE…. USED TO LIVE IN THE 11TH FLOOR AND THEN MOVED TO 5TH LONG STORY WHY BUT I REGRET IT SO MUCH….

BTW USED TO WORK AT THE 70TH FLOOR IN NY…BEST THING EVER…WORK IN 27TH FL IN MIAMI NOW…BREATHTAKING VIEWS….AS I SAID BEFORE THE HIGHER THE BETTER

  7. Pete Says:

I worked on the 24th floor (in Toronto) and the view was the only thing that I looked forward to! :)

I also agree that great furniture always looks better when you can see half the city out your window.

I lived on the 20th on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. I HATED it. Noisy, windy as hell with the windows open, have to use the elevator which means you share it with lots of people, some of whom are not pleasant. Also, if there’s a fire you’re screwed. Stay below 6. I hope never to live above 3 again, but then again, I like looking through trees not down on them. Also, where I live now, it’s so bloody humid and sunny in the summer I like my windows shaded. Oh, and if you like watching the snow fall, you really don’t get the right feel high up and you don’t know how deep it is until you walk down the hallway, wait for the elevator, board it, step out, go to the lobby and look out. Then back up you go to get the right shoes or boots.

Kurt, thanks for the comment. :)

I think the only way to go is to get 2 places… one on the 2nd floor, and one up high! ;)

PS: Noise on the 20th floor? Was it because of wind or traffic?

Lived on 20th floor for 3 (or 4?) years. That was fantastic - the view is amazing, the light is GORGEOUS, and privacy is enviable.

    (that was in Toronto, YMMV)

I once lived on the 12th floor of a building and, like someone else who posted here, the wind drove me crazy. What was the point of having a great view from the balcony if you couldn’t go out there?

  13. bc Says:

I lived on the 14th floor of a building on Union Square in NY for a summer. The building across the street was, I guess, 12 stories. It had a huge, noisy airconditioning unit on the roof. I remember feeling relief every time the compresser finally shut off.

  14. Pete Says:

Good feedback, thanks everyone for your participation… I never would have thought about it but “bc” makes a good point about the A/C units, one more thing to look out for!

But what if you have an open stadium near by? I’d say that the occational noise is easier to put up with when you can watch events for free… any thoughts?
