This is one of the sexiest pieces of furniture available… very simple, high style and extremely elegant. This lamp is sure to light up any interior.

Made from recyclable silicone makes it able to be dropped, knocked or tipped over with little concern. Jerry Lamp is soft and durable and because of its pliable hook shape, the Jerry Lamp can be used almost anywhere.

When lit, the Jerry Lamp will get warm to the touch but not hot. The silicone is nontoxic and hypoallergenic. Perfect as a utility light around the house or workspace (or kid’s room).

It’s important to figure out what type of lighting you need in a room and go from there. It’s kind of like dressing for the cold weather, it’s better to do it in layers instead of an all-in-one solution. With all the different lighting fixtures, lamps, dimmers, light modifiers and so on available, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t experiment with your light setup!

A good rule of thumb for non invasive light in the living area is to opt for a few lamps and have your main lights on a dimmer so you can control their intensity… the dimmer is also useful in the bedroom and bathroom (assuming you have more than just a single light source)… experiment, you’ll be glad you did.

It goes way back to 1907, before mid-century modern, before Eames, Nelson and even the Bauhaus… it’s an oldie but a goody for sure. This is more than a lamp, it’s a work of art, more than capable enough to be viewed as a sculpture… yet powerful enough (about 500W) to do the job it was built for.

It doesn’t come cheap though (too bad) but on the bright side, it can be a good DIY project (think photographic equipment).

The May Day light is made of Polycarbonate plastic, white shade, waterproof on/off switch and your choice of three colors for the handle. It can sit on a flat surface, be hung from the hook or held by hand for more precise work. Add to this the fact that it’s durable and cheap and you’ve got a winner.

The May Day light retails at under $100 and is a great indoor or outdoor light.

George nelson is definitely one of my favorite designers, from furniture to clocks to lights, his work is truly inspiring and like Charles and Ray Eames; iconic.

Today I’ve got lights on my mind… for some reason I’ve been really taking notice of the different light fixtures people have in their homes, offices and places of business. But it’s the light fixtures that adorn our living areas that deserve the most attention.

Pictured is the classic Ball Pendant from George Nelson. It’s a simple, classic design that stands the test of time… and looks great in just about any environment.

Even though an original will run you about $300 it’s probably worth buying since most of the knock offs I’ve seen aren’t built to last (and replacing them year after year sucks). Also Ikea doesn’t seem to have a good alternative so…

PS: For those who are interested, the Ball Pendant is made of a translucent plastic and steel wire frame so it’s tough enough to last for a while and you can clean it easily.
