Alongside Charles and Ray Eames as well as George Nelson, Alexander Girard was one of the decisive figures in post-War American design. The focus of his broad oeuvre was on textile design, and a key source of inspiration for him was his passion for the popular art of South America, Asia and East Europe. The Wooden Dolls, which Girard created for his own home in Santa Fe and made himself, are likewise inspired by his own extensive collection of works of popular art. Half decorative element, half toy, the Wooden Dolls were originally intended only for personal use. Based on originals found in the Girard Estate held by the Vitra Design MuseumDimensions (inches): Doll No. 1: 10.75 H 2 W 1.5 D Doll No. 2: 7.25 H 3 W 1.75 D Doll No. 3: 5.75 H 3 W 1.75 D Doll No. 4: 10.75 H 3 W 1.75 D Doll No. 5: 10.75 H 2 W 1.50 D Doll No. 6: 7 H 2.75 W 1.75 DDoll No. 7: 12 H 1.75 W 1.50 D Doll No. 8: 8.25 H 2.75 W 1.75 D Doll No. 9: 8 H 2.50 W 1.75 D Doll No. 10: 6.25 H 3 W 1.75 D Doll No. 11: 7.75 H 3 W 1.75 D

Some brothers just have piles of laundry or old crackers lying around their apartments. Harry Allen’s brother it seems is quite the opposite. He must have lots of cool stuff. Which in turn, Harry borrows, casts, and makes it possible for each of us to have our own. We wonder if he gives the treasures back?

Most of the modern products we see today strive to announce their arrival through bold colors and graphic patterns. Area bedding, however, bucks the trend. Everything about the collection appeals to our organic, serene modern side. Basic colors that are always in style. . . whites, blues, greys, tans. . . on fabrics that feel like a breath of fresh air against your skin. Area’s mission is simple: original designs, natural fibers, and long-lasting beauty and comfort. Area bedding isn’t designed to rev up a room the way some of our other lines are. Instead, it brings calmness into what should, by rights, be the most relaxing room in your home. Theo coverlets and pillowcases come in muted shades that help your eyes and mind relax, and the even, repeating pattern of rectangles is slightly hypnotic, if you let your eyes unfocus just a little bit. Add to that the feel of the woven lightweight cotton–soft as a dream–and you’re a good way toward a great night’s sleep.

Everybody loves the familiar, right? It’s comfortable, reassuring, gentle . . . and everywhere. If everybody loves it, that means it’s hard to get away from. It’s almost impossible for a thing–a consumer good, anyway–to be familiar and individual at the same time. You’ve seen this problem in shoes, at least if you’ve tried to buy men’s shoes for shorts-or-sports wear in the past couple years.Doreen Hing saw the same problem during her years as a shoe designer, and grew weary of it. When she began to observe it again, this time in yoga mats, she decided to put a stop to it. She was “visually bored”" with the solid-colored mats all around, so she came up with mats that are anything but boring. Mats need carriers, other yoga accessories need roomy tote bags, and before she knew it she had a whole company’s worth of designs. She and Jennifer McKinley formed Plank, which brings a welcome measure of wit and design flexibility both to the surprisingly stiff world of yoga and to life outside the classroom, using fun graphics and strong color combinations.”

It’s lovely to show off for your partner or dinner guests by gliding serenely out of the kitchen holding a tray of . . . well, whatever you’re serving. But if you’re headed into a clean, attractive room without any frills or florals, it just doesn’t work to carry a scrolled, engraved, sterling silver tray. And not everyone likes to have a nature scene lurking beneath the flatware. Try this Bent Ply Serving Tray–simple, bright, and very elegant.
