The Best Modern Sofa
Alright, let me clear up what I mean by “the best modern sofa”… I’m not talking about Bauhaus, International style, mid century or whatever. I’m talking about Modern as in Recently Designed!
The Goetz Sofa, pictured, was designed my Mark Goetz in 1999. I found out about this sofa a few years back and I can say with all honesty that it is my favorite sofa to date. I do not have one though… at about $5k it’s a little too expensive and the thought (expense) of trashing my current furniture to make room for a more elegant setup is a little overwhelming at the moment.
This sofa is available in many different color combinations. Shown here in black leather and walnut veneer, my favorite is the gray leather (there’s something about gray leather that is just so elegant and classy). The Goetz is manufactured by Herman Miller.

The couch is interesting, but it reminds me of a Van Der Rohe with paneling. I just picked up two Century Modular Sofas here in LA(http://www.rezon8living.com/pc-century-modular-sofa-section-wside-table-3801-20.aspx)and pushed them together to create my own version of the Jetson’s living room. Food for thought.

This same type of sofa was popular in the US during the 1950s or 1960s. Nothing fancy to it, but built like a tank. I prefer a simpler look over some of the fluff pieces now being marketed.

The Goetz is an awesome piece of furniture. I bought mine about four years ago from highbrowfurniture.com and still revere the sleek elegance of Mark Goetz’ design as I did the day it was delivered. It’s a timeless classic that perfectly complements my Noguchi table and Eames plywood LCW lounge chairs. My only regret is that I didn’t order the sofa upholstered in black leather. I ordered it in a very cool Eames small dot pattern fabric made by Maharam. But with a small daughter who has grown up with the Goetz (same age), the material has not held up as well as I had hoped. It must be noted however that this is our primary piece of living room furniture and has endured every spill and smudge and accident imagineable. I always tell myself that after my daughter gets past the messy stage in her life that I’ll take my Goetz back to the factory and have it uphostered in that sweet black leather! It’s only a 5-hour drive from my home in Wisconsin to the Grand Rapids area.
Incidentally, I was lucky enough to have seen the final stage of my Goetz Sofa’s construction at the factory. It was an experience that me and my wife wil not soon forget, courtesy of the fine folks at Herman Miller for the Home. Please don’t let my daughter’s antics dissuade a decision to upholster this excellent piece in a Maharam fabric. The staff at highbrowfurniture.com do a first-rate job offering a vast array of fabric options and go through the selection process step-by-step, at a great price as well. My veneer option is a rich dark cherry, that will match a similarly veneered Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. They will both be upholstered in black leather, of course.
