First off, look at it! It’s a big shaggy ball. Both adults and children alike are sure to love it (just be careful your kids don’t choke on any of those shaggy bits). Secondly, it’s made of recycled flip-flops, so it’s a green product, recycled goods are always cool.

And if that fact alone wasn’t enough to win you over, the soft rubber from flip-flops is used without further manufacturing and it’s made by social organizations that provide work for otherwise unemployed craftspeople from the local community. So this ottoman makes a positive social impact as well.

It goes way back to 1907, before mid-century modern, before Eames, Nelson and even the Bauhaus… it’s an oldie but a goody for sure. This is more than a lamp, it’s a work of art, more than capable enough to be viewed as a sculpture… yet powerful enough (about 500W) to do the job it was built for.

It doesn’t come cheap though (too bad) but on the bright side, it can be a good DIY project (think photographic equipment).

Well, despite the lure of the Aeron and other such ergonomic masterpieces, I’ve decided to keep it simple and classy… my choice is the Eames Management Chair.

Let’s face it, this is one of the most beautiful, elegant and tasteful office chairs ever. Ergonomics aside, I doubt that anyone would find sitting in one of these all day objectionable. What it lacks in the newest trends and adjustable lumbar supports, it gains in style… and that’s what it’s all about when you really think about it. ;)

Your thoughts?

The only down side is that owning one is becoming a cliché. It seems that anyone who would like to have a modern looking interior and has some cash will default to the Barcelona chair, even if that’s the only bit of modern kit in the whole place. Not to say that they’re making a poor choice, they’re not… but you know what I’m getting at.

For those who care to know, the Barcelona chair was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1929. That’s over 80 years ago!

It was designed for the German Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Barcelona. The Barcelona chair was meant to act as a thrown for the king and queen of Spain, while the Barcelona stool (some think it’s an ottoman) was meant for other guests.

One more bit of information, the chairs are made from a single hide of top quality leather. The hide is cut into several sections that will be later assembled to form the familiar shape of the Barcelona chair’s cushions. Originally, master glove makers where employed for the task to ensure the best craftsmanship possible.

Now you know why they cost so much! :)
